Leg Hair on Dude Mountain | Conversations in Alaska, 27 of 50

As we were walking down Dude Mountain (Ria, Chaz and I), dodging the muddy tracks and trying not to fall on our faces (principally me), Ria shared:
“I used to feel self-conscious about my leg hair so I would shave.
In middle school I shaved my legs and then I realized that women didn’t start shaving until the 1920s because razor companies wanted to expand their market.
And also because panty hose became popular at that time and shaving was encouraged for that reason, too. There was actually this model who appeared with her armpits shaved and all the companies went crazy because they liked the look of it.
The only reason I really shave my armpits is because I prefer it over wearing deodorant and I don’t want to smell. So that’s why I do that, because it’s easier.
It’s all true, you can look it up!”

And Ria doesn’t shave her legs.
She explained that her mom told her she had to shave her legs for her sister’s wedding. She explained to her mom why women began shaving their legs in the 20s so that razor companies could expand their markets. Her mom said she didn’t care.
And this is why Ria has bigger balls than me. I do care what people think about my body, even if it’s something that razor companies sanctioned to expand their markets before alcohol was even legal. Times have changed, I still shave my legs and armpits. Ria won’t stand for it.
